Dyeing Wastewater Treatment and Reuse: Process Options for Textile Mills

Dyeing Effluent Profile

Dyeing wastewater carries reactive dyes, salts, surfactants, and high COD. Color is the visible problem; salinity and refractory COD are the harder ones. Combined with printing waste, the stream becomes highly variable in pH and composition.

Treatment Train for Dyeing Wastewater

Equalization and Neutralization

A properly sized equalization tank smooths pH, temperature, and dye concentration swings between batches. Chemical conditioning follows for pH control and partial color precipitation.

Biological Treatment

Anaerobic processes break the azo dye bonds and remove color where aerobic treatment alone cannot. Aerobic polishing - activated sludge or MBR - completes COD removal. MBR is preferred where the mill plans to reuse water.

Advanced Color Removal

For residual color, ozonation or Fenton oxidation provides the final polish. These processes are sized on the residual fraction after biological treatment, not on the raw stream, to keep chemical costs under control.

Water Reuse by Membrane

Ultrafiltration plus reverse osmosis turns treated effluent into process water for washing and dyeing. Reuse rates of 50-70% are typical; the RO concentrate can be further concentrated by MVR evaporation.

Selection Criteria

Choose the train by reuse target, salt content, and discharge limit. Mills with zero liquid discharge mandates need the full chain: biological, UF-RO, and evaporation. Confirm dye classes in production because reactive, disperse, and vat dyes respond differently to biological and oxidative treatment.
