Paper Mill Effluent Characteristics
Pulp and paper mills discharge large volumes of water containing fibers, lignin, starch, and bleaching chemicals. COD ranges from moderate in papermaking to very high in pulping and deinking. Temperature is often above 30°C, which affects biological design.
Treatment Stages
Primary Clarification
Dissolved air flotation recovers fibers and removes suspended solids. Recovered fiber can return to the stock preparation line, reducing raw material loss.
Anaerobic Treatment
High-rate anaerobic reactors such as IC systems handle warm, soluble COD efficiently. They generate biogas that mills use for steam or drying. Anaerobic treatment is usually the first biological stage because it removes the largest fraction of COD per unit of energy.
Aerobic Polishing
Activated sludge or MBR systems remove the remaining BOD. Where nitrogen and phosphorus are limited, dosing systems supply nutrients in controlled amounts.
Tertiary Treatment for Reuse
Sand filtration, disc filters, or ultrafiltration polish the effluent for process reuse or for discharge to sensitive receiving waters. Zero discharge plants add reverse osmosis and evaporation.
Process Selection Factors
Choose between anaerobic and aerobic stages by COD load, temperature, land availability, and biogas value. Reuse targets determine whether membrane polishing is justified. Always size the first stage for fiber and solids recovery, not only for compliance.
