Sludge Dewatering Screw Press: Selection and Operating Guide
How to select and operate a screw press for sludge dewatering: capacity, dryness, polymer dosing, and maintenance for municipal and industrial sludge.
Why Screw Presses Are Popular
Screw presses - including volute and multi-disc designs - dewater sludge continuously with low energy, low noise, and minimal operator attention. They handle municipal waste activated sludge, industrial biological sludge, and many chemical sludges, producing cake in the 18-30% dry solids range depending on sludge type and conditioning.
How It Works
Sludge is flocculated with polymer, then fed into a slowly rotating screw inside a cylindrical screen. Water drains through the screen as the screw conveys and compresses the solids toward the discharge end. A back-pressure plate controls cake dryness.
Selection Parameters
Sludge Type and Concentration
Capacity is expressed in kg dry solids per hour, not cubic meters of wet sludge. A press rated for 60 kg DS/h handles roughly 6 m3/h of 1% sludge or 1.5 m3/h of 4% sludge. Always size on dry solids and verify the feed concentration range.
Dryness Target
Volute presses typically reach 20-25% DS on municipal waste activated sludge and higher on primary or mixed sludge. Multi-disc presses reach similar dryness with finer control but tighter tolerances. Set the target from your disposal route: incineration, composting, and landfill each have different minimum dryness.
Polymer Consumption
Polymer is the dominant operating cost. Proper flocculation can cut consumption by 30% or more. Select the polymer type with jar tests on the actual sludge, and size the dosing system for accurate, adjustable flow rather than a fixed dose.
Operating Practice
Startup
Bring the press to operating speed before feeding sludge. Start polymer dosing slightly high, then reduce while watching filtrate clarity. A press that runs dry or floods at startup wears prematurely.
Steady State
Adjust back-pressure to hit the dryness target without over-torquing the screw. Monitor filtrate suspended solids: rising solids mean under-dosing polymer or over-feeding sludge. Log torque, flow, and polymer rate - trends predict maintenance needs.
Shutdown
Flush the screen and screw with water at the end of each shift. Dried sludge hardens in the screen slots and causes the next startup to overload.
Maintenance Essentials
Inspect the screen, screw flights, and seals quarterly. Replace worn screw flights before clearance opens and dewatering performance collapses. Check the drive torque limiter monthly - it protects the gearbox from foreign objects and sludge slugs.
