Sugar Mill Wastewater Profile

Sugar mills produce effluent with very high COD and BOD from cane washing, juice extraction, and molasses handling. The season is short and intense, so treatment plants must start fast and handle load swings between crushing and non-crushing periods.

Treatment Approach

Anaerobic First

For high-strength streams, anaerobic treatment is the economic first stage. IC reactors remove 70-85% of COD and generate biogas that can fuel boilers during the crushing season.

Aerobic Polishing

Aerobic systems - activated sludge or lagoons with aeration - finish the job. Design for the seasonal pattern: aeration capacity that idles efficiently outside the season or runs at reduced load.

Solids Handling

Screening and settling remove cane debris before biological stages. Sludge from both stages is thickened and dewatered with screw presses before disposal or land application.

Seasonal Operation Considerations

Specify equipment that tolerates intermittent operation. Anaerobic reactors need a heating plan for cold-season startup, and sludge handling must cope with the crushing-season peak.
